n 19. Nature and environment
So my topic is nature and environment. Nature is an equivalent to the world, the environment or the universe. It contains all energy and materials, but without human intervention. We can divide nature into biotic and abiotic nature. Biotic nature relates to living organisms and abiotic nature contains non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment, for example light, water, wind or temperature. But people often damage the nature. We dirty the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other substances and damage the soil with fertilisers. Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems in the world today. It contains global warming, greenhouse effect, damage of the ozone layer or acid rains. I think the one of the greatest problems is a damage of the ozone layer and sometimes the ozone hole. It can be caused by sprays. They contain fluorine which can damage the ozone layer. Ozone is a gas consists of three oxygen atoms. And we know three types of ozone. One is thirty kilometres high above the surface. A hundred years ago, ozone layer was two metres wide. But from 1930s, sprays have contained fluorine which can damage ozone layer. Now, scientists think that ozone layer is a few millimetres wide. And ozone layer helps to protect us from radiations, which can damage our skins and cause a cancer. The second type of ozone is low level ozone. Its about half metre above the surface. Its dangerous for children because ozone is a poison. And the third type of ozone is blood ozone. We can find it in lymphocytes. Other great problem is global warming. Its a rise of the average temperature. The average temperature has risen by one centigrade since the end of the 19th century. However, rise of temperature causes melting of glaciers mainly in Antarctica and in the Arctic and the sea-level will rise. If all worlds glaciers will melt, the sea-level can rise by nearly one hundred metres. A lot of great worlds cities will be drown, for example New York, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, London, Cairo, Lagos, Sydney or Tokio. And there is also a possibility that Czech Republic will have a sea, but of course we dont want this situation. Global warming is caused by the Sun, volcanic eruptions and greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane or also water vapour. And the third great problem is greenhouse effect. Its a process when land, oceans and atmosphere absorbs the Suns radiation and the Earths temperature rise. However greenhouse gases accelerate greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases are often formed in factories. And just power plants or factories are one of the greatest sources of pollution. So in the world today there are many groups of people which are often called greens. The greatest goal of their work is improvement the level of pollution. The most famous ecological organisation is Greenpeace. It was founded in 1971 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The focus of the organisation is fight against whaling, global warming, nuclear power or deforestation. Just rainforests help to control global warming. But people destroy large areas of rainforest, for example in Amazonia, equatorial Africa or Indonesia, for wood or for land for farming. And many plant or animal species that live there could extinct. Its all about it, I like the nature, I would like to visit forests and lakes in Canada, Yellowstone park in the United States, than Scandinavia, mainly fjords in Norway and I like also Balkan Peninsula, mainly Bo s n i a a n d H e r z e g o v i n a w h i c h I h a v e v i s i t e d .
