History:
1) The original inhabitants Celts we still have Scotish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Welsh but only few words in English have Celnic roots.
2) English began as a west Germanic language which was brought to England by the Angles and Saxons (Germanic tribes) around 400 A.D. It was called Old English. (Many words used today come from Old English man, woman, mother, king). Old English has many inflections to show singular and plural, tense, person tec, but over the centuries the words have been simplified. Verbs now have very few inflections and adjectives do not change according to the noun. English has become very flexible, the same word can operate as many different parts of speech water/to water; to dirty/dirty etc. Instead of cases, English has a fixed word order.
3) 9th, 10th century Vikings invaded England words like sky, get; also peoples names (Johnson), place names.
4) From the Norman Conquest (Battle of Hastings 1066) until late 12th century English was replaced as the official language by Norman French, but English was still used by the lower classes. Words connected with government, administration, court are originally from French royal, legal; and also words that describe food. Because of this reason there are also many synonyms eg. phrasal verbs and their equivalents; (to put off used by lower classes; to postpone used by higher classes; similarly to go out, to exit; )
5) During Rennaisance, many words were introduced from Greek and Latin to express new ideas, especially in science, medicine, and philosophy (physics, species, architecture);
6) Why are pronunciation and spelling so different? Mainly due to the invention of a printing press (15th century) spelling got fixed but pronunciation continued to develop.
7) Other characteristics of English: openness of vocabulary free admission of words from other languages and also easy creation of new words (mainly compounds); give examples!
Also a lot of synonyms, homonyms, homophones and homographs;
